Open Source Software – Risks, Use and Compliance
InHouse Blog
Open Source Software (“OSS”) is currently pervasive in its use for companies both large and small. Businesses use OSS to develop software rapidly and effectively, whether for their internal systems or for customer-facing products. Although OSS is obtained at no charge, there are significant risks in its usage because if the OSS is not integrated properly into existing systems, it can “infect” proprietary software, and a company is at risk of losing significant ownership value. This program will address the following:

How is OSS licensed?
Risks in use of OSS.
Procedures to use when introducing OSS into a company’s systems.
How to develop an OSS Compliance Policy.
Documenting OSS usage.
OSS due diligence and representations in mergers, acquisitions and transfers of software assets.

What’s the ‘Coolest’ Product From LegalTech New York?

I covered some cool tools prior to the show, e.g., Index Engines Octane and iTwin’s reinvention of the USB drive to get secure access to your content without lending it to a third-party storage provider, i.e., cloud storage like Dropbox or perhaps Mozy’s new Stash. With Stash, you can copy files to a dedicated online space and synchronize them between multiple computers — no need to transfer files to USB or send them to yourself via email. (read the article)

LegalTech New York is right around the corner, but frankly, it’s a tradeshow that hasn’t been known to offer much for the corporate legal operations folks. This year’s show vows to be different, hosting its first ever law operations track, “Legal Operations- Forming a New Identity.”

The track will include two sessions, “Foundations of Legal Operations”, with panelists from Amgen, Fidelity Investments and MetLife. And, session 2, “Profiles of Effective Law Department Operations”, with Brad Blickstein, David Cambria of CDW and formerly of Aon as well as Rees Morrison. It’s sure to be a powerful time!
