LegalTech West Coast and Law Department Operations.
LegalTech West Coast and Law Department Operations.
Jason Emanis
Just got back from LegalTech West Coast where Law Department Operations had a measurable presence. With a 2-day track focused on in-house department operations, there was plenty of education and networking to be had.
In case you missed it, the track looked like this:
Day 1
The Heart of Legal Operations
Collaborating with Law Firms and Corporate Counsel
Sharing Requirements and Innovation Ideas for Practical Solution Implementation.
Day 2
The Role of Legal Operations
Case Studies of Successful Implementations
Metrics and Dashboards- Examples of Useful Report Formats.
So, what or who, has been the impetus behind ALM’s newfound love for corporate department operations given their historical focus on lawyering and, oh yeah, eDiscovery? It started with John Barber way back before LegalTech New York 2012. John is the Law Operations Senior Manager for Amgen, Inc. John has a passion for his role in the marketplace and wants nothing more than to bring his peers together so that they might learn from each other. But, he knew he couldn’t do it alone, so he sought out a fellow colleague he met six years ago, Elizabeth Jaworski, Director Legal Operations, Motorola Mobility, Inc. Together, they have put together a string of educational sessions regarding law department operations, between LegalTech New York and West Coast, not to be rivaled.
And, of course, they haven’t done it alone. They reached out to the “who’s who” in law operations. Below, is a list of speakers they’ve secured over the two conferences. Though this only scratches the surface, if you are in in-house law operations, these are the people you should get to know.
David Cambria, Sr. Director, Enterprise Information Management, CDW
Steve Harmon, Senior Director Legal Services, Cisco
Gary Tully, Director Legal Operations, Qualcomm
David Yerich, Director eDiscovery United Healthcare Group
Cheryl Muise, VP Fidelity Legal Program and Operations Management
Ben Reichner, Director Legal Affairs, MetLife
Sue Northrop, IT Manager , Warner Bros
Kelsey Joyce, Director of Legal Affairs, T-Mobile
James Shimmel, Southern California Edison
Brad Blickstein, Blickstein Group (creator of the Annual LDO Survey)
Rees Morrison, Law Department Management
A hearty congratulations goes out to John and Elizabeth for successfully leading the way for the development of law department operations. They are fine ambassadors for the movement and you should get to know them. You may find them on LinkedIn at John Barber and Elizabeth Jaworski.
And, save the date, (Jan 28-30, 2013) because Bridgeway Software has committed to the sponsorship of the LDO Track at LegalTech New York 2013, as we have for New York and West Coast 2012. John and Elizabeth will be relaxing over the next few day, then we’ll be back at it for 2013. Hope to see you there!
